I'm not sure, but what kind of margin can persuade business people to re-open factories that produce TVs/refrigerators and ordinary workers to accept such jobs?
Ask HN: Why are online training classes divided into small chunks?

Yeah I got the rate wrong :(
The fact that the company invests heavily in Bitcoin is a surprise for me. After a second thought this probably is a bit more risky but no different in essence from other investments, in bonds or in stocks. Still I hope what the CEO said was true i.e. the company has enough $$ to cover its loan. There could be other black swan events that blocks converting Bitcoin to USD.
50bps. Fed rarely surprises the market (so either 50bps or 75bps) plus 50bps gives the market a bit of breath that it needs, given that it got hammered pretty badly.
Thanks! Yeah I'm more interested in insane optimization, especially done in modern time as people don't have to optimize that crazily these days.
Is there any place that I find technical optimization details regarding porting graphical intensive games (such as DOOM/Quake) to a platform that is significantly less powerful than their intended ones?

I think life is way more complex than the poker. Yes the mindset could be useful, but mindset without proper data is not going to help a lot.
Here is what I'm thinking: How about we go up a level, and accept that life is basically random and a lot is decided by luck (your gene is luck, your childhood education is also luck, these two pretty much decide a lot of things), as indicated in the article, but maintain a (meta) mindset that can manoeuvre around or even mitigate negative emotions?
For example:
- Realize that probability is useful in poker but not that useful in life, thus it is impossible to calculate mathematical expectation.
- Learn to harden one against impulsive emotional acts (impulsive purchase, suicidal thoughts, etc.).
- Learn to control one's material requirements and save some $$ for rainy days.
- Keep connections active so when really bad days come maybe someone can get you out.
One thing I don't get is why there is a such high regard of visual input. I mean, we can speak to our friends since the telephone age, and we can see them on screen too since maybe the 90s. Is there a huge demand to actually see them IN THE SAME ROOM?
I really don't think so. But maybe future generations have different ideas. I think VR can make a lot of difference in training (e.g. medical training) but it's not consumer stuff.
I actually think we had those escapes since I-don't-know-when. People don't need to actually see virtual reality to escape from reality. Actually a good book does a good job too.
On a side note, I really hope Epic can open source UE1. I know folks on OldUnreal is already doing a lot but I think they can do much more if the whole engine is available. Kudos to ID for pioneering open sourcing their engines.
In Quaddicted, try the following:
- Anything made by czg
- Try this one: ne_ruins.zip - The Altar of Storms
Speaking about independent thoughts, I think it's crucial to NOT trust anything one heard and do one's own research, especially those fed by news agencies. By saying "research" I mean a rigorous research that not only includes newspaper, magazine and other light reading materials, but also drill deep into books and (most important) official documents if applicable.
I also found it useful to build up a framework of analysis to remove some weight of the research. After all one cannot take that research methodology to everything one would like to research into, so by getting a framework one knows which material to avoid.
> Now he's retiring, if the business is to continue we'll basically have to find someone who can migrate it to higher level platforms and languages. There aren't many (any?) people around willing/able to work with this kind of assembly code these days.
I think you can definitely hire someone for training and go from there. I don't see a huge problem about assembly language.
Does your father keep notes? Is it possible to share them?
I think the Turing Test is more than that?

Actually I prefer not to show face during any meeting. So probably won't buy an extra camera just for that. However, could be useful once I'm semi-retired and start streaming retro gaming.
