There's sort of a "Maslow's Hierarchy of User Needs" that exists in software though. So long as the user can do something, and their immediate needs are met, performance concerns are just a small annoyance. And generally they will continue to ask for more features rather than performance improvements as long as the app remains usable.

Yup. The reality is that programmer time is far far more expensive than compute time. And as long as that's the case, increasing levels of abstraction are our only hope at building complex software.

Exact same experience working on a team that had this as a standard. It's absolute nonsense. It can be enforced with CSS linting at this point... but why? Never in my decade of writing CSS have I ever ever wished that the declarations in a codebase were alphabetically sorted for any reason. If your class declarations are that large in the first place, you should be breaking things down better.

Blood from a stone and all that. You can only milk people for what they've got, and you can bet that Google's 15% number is not coming out of the kindness of their hearts. It's a competitive tactic to lure app developers away from what they know is a more lucrative platform. Point being that Apple users are, on average, much wealthier and more willing to spend money in an app store, and thus much more profitable per MAU.

Market share doesn't tell the true story. It's all about revenue. Apple generates nearly twice the profits of Google from one third the number of devices.

I think this is what never made sense to me about the failure of Windows Phone. They have a store. They have an operating system. They have an unbelievably extensive list of hardware partners with decades of manufacturing experience. They have some of the best engineers in the world. And yet, they ceded the single largest consumer industry to Google and Apple. The only explanation is poor leadership.

Imagine a world where Ballmer wasn't blinded by the desktop and enterprise market during the 2000s, and Windows Phone actually became a thing, and we had true competition among flagship phones today. Imagine a Surface Pro phone with modern specs that could sideload any x86 application. One can dream.

I suspect we will start seeing the first true drone swarm deployments in Ukraine over the next couple years. The world is simply not ready for how horrifying it will be. These things can be manufactured for a few hundred bucks a piece. Sony can pump out 10 million PlayStations in a few months. What happens when that kind of logistics and manufacturing is applied to kamikaze drones? You get swarms of tens of thousands of them. The entire future of land warfare from this point on will be an arms race between drone swarms. And the swarms will take on combined arms aspects; there will be AA, AT, AP, incendiary, electronic warfare, observation, and hunter-killer variants. Winning wars in the future will consist of choosing the correct size and makeup of your swarm to counter the enemy's capability.

The modern web browser as a universal VM is the single greatest technical achievement in the history of personal computing. I think Ryan is spot on here. There's plenty of reason to be critical of the web as a platform, but the reality is that we have finally achieved what people dreamed about in the 80s and 90s; a true write-once-run-everywhere platform. And Javascript (more specifically, V8) is core to that.

This is the painful reality that anyone self-taught who wants to break into this industry will have to face. I spent my entire 20s grinding endlessly. Constantly learning, constantly coding, working 18 hour days nonstop. I studied CS theory, engineering principles, frameworks, OS internals, etc., etc., etc. to the absolute exclusion of anything else in life. Now at 32, I see my peers all married with families and personal lives. A life that I do not, and probably will not, ever have at this point because of the sacrifices I made back then. But I am also lightyears ahead of them technically. At my current job I've been promoted 3 levels past the midlevels I started with 4 years ago.

Life is full of decisions, and unfortunately attaining excellence requires commitment, dedication, and focus. You can do alright otherwise, but if you really want this and have the aptitude to reach the top, it will consume you.

I can remember seeing this in action at Stanford. Companies will fall over themselves and pay anything to have their name associated with absolutely anything that has the name Stanford on it. And the students know this, so they play the game. Every student group, organization, club, etc. no matter how small or meaningless is heavily sponsored by relevant corporate donors as a result.

Well, they can. New entrants to the dating app market always start out this way. They gain loads of initial trust and word of mouth growth by putting users first. But they inevitably fall victim to the same market forces as their competition, and slowly become the same thing. It happened to Tinder, it happened to Bumble, and it will happen to Hinge.

Doubly so that the game is written entirely in native C++ and is fully cross platform compatible (mac/windows/linux) with a tiny binary size. The responsiveness and performance of that game even with thousands of agents onscreen has always impressed me.

I'm not sure how they could possibly control against confounding chemical explanations, either. Surely high voltage lines warm the nearby water, which undoubtedly leads to chemical changes that could affect small larvae.

It's all a matter of spectral density. Frequency is meaningless. The lightbulb over your head is currently irradiating you at a rate something like 100 times more energy than your cell phone. Yes microwaves are dangerous at high power. But the inverse square law means that anyone not literally holding their head up against a 5G tower transmitter is not going to be affected in any way.
